>> shoppers in san jose have an unexpected expense while shopping. >> thank you for joining us. in san jose, paper is going to cost you, and plastic is no longer an option. a plastic bag ban went into effect there today. we're live at a san jose supermarket. >> reporter: you know, over the years, environmentalist groups painted the plastic shopping bags as dangerous to waterways and some birds. so as of today no retailer in san jose is able to issue them any longer. in san jose, paper or plastic is no longer a regular option at the checkout stand. the new ordinance is meeting

with mixed reviews. >> i think it's great. good for the environment. >> i used plastic bags my whole life. i throw my garbage away in them. it stinks. >> the new ordinary gasp pans all retailers from using plastic bags, unlike the ordinance in san francisco which is aimed at larger retailers, and shoppers will be charged ten cents if they use a person bag. >> if you use a bag, they're going to charge you. >> the charge for paper bags is intended to steer customers towards reusable bags but some shoppers decided not to use a bag at all. >> i guess the law came into effect, bring your own bag, but i happened to leave my bag in the vehicle, and, yeah, you're probably right, i don't want to pray the ten cents. >> a ban the grocers association is not jazzed up about, but in

their word, is very workable, a spokesman for the grocers association says the san jose plastic bag ban is modeled after proposed state legislation they supported last year. he says it's fair because all retailers are affected, and the ten-cent charge is different from the san francisco ban that shifted from plastic to paper. >> they elimitted one bag and increased the use of another. so the environment impact isn't as great. >> the plastic bag ban poses an interesting situation for a local mall. the westfield valley fair mall, portion nissan jose, two-thirds of it, and the rest is in santa clara. so, the management of the mall has been encouraging all retailers to abide by the plastic bag ban to make things a little simpler for the shoppers. reporting live in san jose, abc-7 news. >> you don't think about that. a plastic bag ban went into effect today in unincorporated

parts of marin county. customers have to pay five crepts for a paper bag and merchants keeping the fee. they ban does not apply to the clear plastic backs used for produce and meat. >> san francisco is the first city in the nation tone act the plastic bag ban. >> a reminder there are a numb number of new state laws. a change to the child safety seat law requires children to ride in either a car seat or a booster seat until the age of eight or until they reach the height of 4'9". another measure bans the practice of openly carrying unloaded hand guns in public. the law does not apply to long guns or shotguns, and california is the first state to man date the teaching of gay history, requiring schools to include in the public school curriculum the conclusions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender men and

women. conservatives are trying to get a measure on the ball thereto overturn the law. >> the new year means a pay raise for those making minimum wage, they'll now earn $10.24 an hour. a 32-cent increase over what they were earning yesterday. san francisco is the first city in the nation with a minimum hourly wage topping $10 an year. >> new year's eve kept police busy in san jose, they had a total of six stabbings and two shootings. one shooting happened during a new year's eve party at a house on the 2300 block've ridge glen way, where man and a juvenile were shot. one victim appears to be in grave condition. all the victims in the other case are expected to recover. >> alcohol may have been a factor in a fatal accident this morning in sonoma county. the driver of a pickup truck hit a guardrail on highway 116 around 3:00 this morning. his truck tumbled down an

embankment. the man was thrown from the struck died at the scene. fire officials say there was a strong door of alcohol in the truck's cab. >> a suspected drunk driver hit a 15-year-old in a crosswalk in petaluma. this happened at the corner of east washington and edith street just after 12:30 this morning. the young victim was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay. the driver, 20-year-old wesly pickford, admitted to drinking. police say his blood-alcohol level was .15%, nearly twice the legal limit. >> today is the third anniversary of the shoot little death of oscar grant by a transit agency police officer. [chanting] >> hundreds marched from city hall to the fruitvale b.a.r.t. station where grant was shot in 2009 with a confrontation with the former barret officer

>> detectives in los angeles hope surveillance video and other leads help them stop a series of arsons in hollywood. six more suspicious fires broke out last night, bringing the total to 39 since friday. police don't know if it's the work of one arsonist, a group of them or even copycats. many fires started in cars, some spread to carpots and apartments. >> make sure your car is locked and no one can enter your car. >> we have patrols out there, we're working diligently with the cooperative agencies

throughout the county and through the city, to make sure that this is not going to be an incident that is going to continue on. >> nobody has been hurt so far. the fires have broken out in hollywood, l.a.'s fairfax district, north hollywood, and the city of west hollywood. >> the new year's eve fireworks show in san francisco went off without a hitch. >> thousands of people crowded on to the embark dare coe to watch, and weather cooperated. no fog to spoil the view. by 9:30 the embarcadero filled up with revelers. the show ran 15 minutes, featured 5,000 fireworks devices and cost tens of thousands of dollars. >> someone has to clean up after the party, and in new york city, 149 sanitation workers spent the day cleaning the streets in times square. they used 22 trucks and 24 mechanical sweepers to clean up

other 50 tons of confetti, party hats and other holiday cheer. >> during the celebration in new york city, police arrested 68 "occupy wall street" protesters. officers say toward midnight they tore down barricades surrounding the park. other charges include trespassing and disorderly conduct. >> "occupy" activist say they're going out in force for the rose parade in pasadena. they say they'll have their own float of sorts as well as banners and drums. organizers of the rose parade say activists will be as peaceful and knopp violent as possible. the parade is known for its elaborate floral floats, prancing ponies and parching bands but political statements are nothing new. the executive director of the tournament of roses says the parade's overall mission is knopp political and focuses on uniting people from all walks of life. you can watch the parade right here on abc-7 tomorrow morning,

70s. it's 64 in santa cruz. 66 in watsonville. we brokes' records today but i have to wait for the official report to come out. it's another "spare the air" today and tomorrow to. coastal clouds expected to move in and patchy valley fosmg it's looking dry and mild through the week. we did have chance of rain for monday afternoon in the north bay area but took that out of the forecast. poor air quality expected in the north bay for tomorrow and also in santa clara valley but that means no wood-burning for all of us through tomorrow night. so keep that in mind. people trying to burn wood. here's a look at the satellite radar image. this area of high pressure pushing the jet stream to the north and that's kept the moisture to the north. we're not going to see much rain. the high pressure was enough to give us a sunny and mild day today, and then as the cold front starts to move in toward

northern california, we kind of see the tail end of it, so it's very weak at this point. by the time it makes into it the bay area. so tomorrow morning we'll wake up to low clouds and the rain really not even getting to mend seen know county, and then by -- mendocino county, and by tomorrow afternoon, we could see it slip south, but sonoma and napa looking dry. extra cloud cover tomorrow so temperatures cooler than today. your overnight lows in the 40s for the most part. 47 in san francisco. 43 in san jose. a fool cooler spots. some 39s out there. and then for tomorrow, look for pretty nice day ahead. but, again, see more 60s as opposes to 70s. 59 in san francisco. 61 in oakland. 63 in san jose. also, we'll find some upper 60s in monterey bay area. 66 in morgan hill. and here's the accuweather seven-day forecast.
